The lightest metal, lithium, burns on water with a crimson flame. Steve Walter first became acquainted with lithium as a schoolboy in chemistry. He was fascinated how alkali metals catch fire when exposed to moisture, and can only be stored immersed in oil.
More recently, Steve came to know lithium for quite a different reason. Its salt which was prescribed after his first acute psychotic episode, or breakdown, and it has become a familiar and not entirely comfortable companion.
The poems in A Lighter Metal range from that time to the present day, and trace a path through love, childhood, the passing of time, Steve's parents (artist Mum, poet Dad), and profound concern for the planet.
"We are connected to all that have ever existed throughout evolution, from the beginning of life itself, the creation of earth, other planets, stars, and their elements, which have become an essential, living part of us," says Steve. "We need to appreciate the stillness of things, the nature of life, its essence, responding to the world through our senses, for instance, as we notice the angle of the light, cool breeze on the face, birdsong, contact with the earth, perhaps even the heady scents of summer."
