Geese Out of Time

Geese Out of Time

Along the water’s edge, baby geese feed,
Heedless of cars driven by headless men
In a hurry to go they know not where
To do they know not what. Geese do not heed
Them, do not surrender, though they would seem
To sacrifice themselves in the onslaught,
Their slow moving souls saying “we are here,
And our children are here, and they will cross
Like turtles and good Yankee neighbors;
They have been here since well before the road,
And they will be here when here again returns
To nowhere, the delights of the ages well spent.
Traffic piles up where people note the birds.
No place to go, they’ve abandoned all words.
