My Mother's Hands

My Mother's Hands

I loved my mother's hands -
A small woman - barely five foot two
Her hands smaller than a child’s.
She didn’t live to be old -
At seventy three I have outlived her by three years -
She was three months short of her three score years and ten…
My daughter said recently "Mum I
Love your hands" -
Mother of three sons maybe it will be left to her now baby granddaughter,
To pass on the admiration -
When she read this she cried having been
Only seventeen when her grandmother died -
Through her tears she smiled and said
"Mum I’ve got very large hands!"
However she is in every other way the image of my mother -
A consoling thought -
Life is really special.
