Reflections on a Painting of a Woman and a Dog

Reflections on a Painting of a Woman and a Dog

I watch you sleep, the calm overwhelming, the early light
on your shoulders enticing, old dog gently curled against your back,
a painted picture I will forever hold among my keepsakes.

Daydreams place me beside you, old dog makes room for three,
as you yawn and stretch, turn towards me, smile, as sun
continues to warm the room, raising the scent of love at dawn.

Today we would stroll by the slow cloud-reflecting river,
dog wandering ahead, you'd turn to me with wandering eyes,
knowing you're just a painting, hoping I could
be brushed in beside you forever.
